Classmate vs. ChatGPT and Claude for essay feedback

Most students we talk to have tried pasting an essay into ChatGPT or Claude and asking for feedback. It works (sort of). You get a wall of bullet points, you scroll back and forth between the chat and your draft, and half the time the chatbot just rewrites your essay for you.

We built Classmate because it's almost impossible to get useful writing feedback from a chatbot, and learn while doing it.

Feedback in a chat vs. feedback on your draft

Chat feels too linear for feedback. You get paragraphs back, maybe with a few sections in bold, and then it's on you to figure out where each point applies. You end up switching between tabs and scrolling up and down, trying to match the chat to your draft.

With Classmate, you're done copying a quote out of ChatGPT and hitting Ctrl+F to find it in your essay. Every comment sits right next to the sentence it's about, and you revise in the same place. Have a question about a comment? Ask it right there, in that comment's thread. Everything is in one place.

Learning vs. getting it rewritten

ChatGPT and Claude are built to do the work for you. Ask for feedback and you'll often get a rewritten paragraph back, which is terrible for your learning.

Classmate helps you actually learn. It points out what you did well and where you can improve, and asks questions that make you think about how to make the writing better. Over time, you start to see the patterns yourself, and your writing gets better as a whole, not just this one essay.

When a chatbot is the better tool

Classmate is built for the moment after your first draft, when you want that extra 20% of polish that takes your writing from mediocre to stunning. Chatbots can be better at other parts of the process, like brainstorming ideas or doing research.

Chatbots are also great at doing the work for you. If you don't want to learn how to improve your writing, or you're fine with generic, AI-sounding writing, a chatbot is a great choice.

Try it on your own essay

Classmate is free for anyone to use. If you're deciding between AI tools, give Classmate a try and get feedback on your essay in less than a minute.
