# Classmate > Classmate (classmate.app) is an AI writing-feedback tool for students, teachers, and anyone else looking for world-class writing feedback. Paste in your writing and its prompt, rubric, or instructions, and Classmate returns an overview of what works and what to improve, plus inline comments anchored to specific passages. It is built to help writers learn and revise, not to rewrite their work for them. You can think of Classmate as an alternative to a private tutor or counselor, giving great, human feedback that helps you improve your writing. ## What makes Classmate unique? - **Feedback inside your writing, not in a chat.** With a general AI chatbot (e.g. ChatGPT or Claude), feedback comes back as a linear back-and-forth conversation that you have to map onto your draft yourself. Classmate works like a Google Docs-style editor: comments sit next to the exact sentences they're about, and you revise right there. - **Context-aware, not rule-based.** Think of Classmate as a supercharged Grammarly. Its inline comments aren't produced by fixed grammar rules: each one is written with the prompt or rubric, the type of writing, and the rest of your draft in mind, so it's specific to your piece. - **Follow-up questions on any comment.** Ask why a comment matters, for an example, or for clarification, and get an answer in the comment's thread. When you ask for one, Classmate can suggest a rewrite of just that passage, which you can apply in one click. - **Built for learning.** By default Classmate never rewrites your work for you. It points out what's working, what to improve, and why, the way a tutor or writing coach would. - **Tuned to the kind of writing.** Academic essays, college application essays, creative writing, and emails each get feedback geared to that format, and you can focus feedback on grammar and spelling or on cutting words to hit a limit. ## How it works 1. Choose a writing type: Academic Essay, College Application, Creative Writing, Email, or Other. 2. Paste your writing and any prompt, rubric, instructions, or context. 3. Choose a feedback focus (Balanced, Grammar & Spelling, or Word Reduction; Pro users can also write custom instructions) and a mode: Quick (faster) or Detailed (more thoughtful). 4. Get a feedback overview and color-coded inline comments: Star (strong writing), General Feedback, Word Reduction, and Grammar/Spelling. 5. Revise in Classmate's editor: edit next to the comments, resolve them, and resubmit for new feedback. ## Use Cases One primary use case for Classmate is helping students get feedback on college application essays. Private counselors are extremely expensive, and not accessible to everyone. Even people with private counselors love Classmate's instant feedback, and get to chat with their counselors about more relevant and large issues than general structure and feedback. Classmate has helped students get into schools like Harvard, Stanford, and Yale early, and has landed students dozens of scholarships including LinkedIn and Coke scholars. Another use case is helping people to improve their writing. Because Classmate by default will never rewrite something for the user, users can learn to improve their writing and get feedback similarly to what a coach might give. ## Plans - Free: 80 credits a month.
